Juggling Life and Learning: My Journey to Becoming a Pregnancy and Postnatal Corrective Exercise Specialist

Updated: Nov 3, 2024

Here I am, I haven't written a blog post for a while, and I have a good reason for it. I was quite busy lately to make sure I get to the end of the Specialist course I signed up for.

To go through my last year, I’m filled with both relief and pride. The journey to becoming a Pregnancy and Postnatal Corrective Exercise Specialist has been a long one—much longer than I originally planned—but it’s finally complete, and I couldn’t be more excited to share it with you.

I first signed up for the course while pregnant with my second child, full of confidence about balancing it all. But life, as it tends to do, had other plans. After giving birth, I found myself navigating the challenges of having a newborn and a 6-year-old, and shortly after that, grieving the loss of my mum, which happened around the time I was meant to complete the course.

I’m incredibly thankful to the course provider, Dr. Sarah Duvall, for giving me the time and flexibility I needed to continue my studies when I felt ready. I squeezed my studies into the unpredictable-length daytime naps of my toddler, alongside some work on my website and social media. Some days I could get a full hour; other days, nothing at all. I am amazed by those mums who manage to work once their kids are asleep at night, but that doesn't work for me. I need my sleep at night, especially since it’s often interrupted, and I can never know in advance how much actual rest I’ll get. Even though it took me an extra year, I am so proud to say that I’m now officially certified as a Pregnancy and Postnatal Corrective Exercise Specialist!

But this journey has been about more than just finishing a course. Over the last 10 months, I’ve managed to create a website from scratch, participate in a 2-month business course, and set up my postnatal classes, which are now moving into their third term. All of this has happened amidst school runs, birthday parties, playdates, and, of course, spending precious time with my kids. Sometimes I don’t even realise how much I’ve done until I stop and review my progress.

Juggling these different roles hasn’t been easy, but it has been deeply rewarding. I love being a mum, love spending time with them, and I feel bad when I can't really focus on them because other errands are occupying my thoughts. Finishing my certification feels like a big weight has lifted, and it reminds me that, even in the busiest of times, we can still make space for growth and accomplishment.

I’m incredibly excited to take my work to the next level. With this new knowledge, I can offer more tailored, specialised support to mums in every stage of their fitness journeys. I look forward to incorporating my new skills into my classes and working not just with postnatal women, but with pregnant mums as well, helping them feel strong and supported during such an important time.

As I move forward from here, I’m filled with gratitude for this journey and excitement for what’s next. This certification marks the start of a new chapter, both for me and for the mums I’m privileged to work with.
